Are affairs about deception of any kind, or just deception about sex only?

And if they can be about anything other than sex, which is what a traditional affair is about, then what exactly constitutes an affair nowadays?

Physical, sexual affairs are the most widely recognized, but emotional affairs are probably the most common. This is when they're not getting physical, so they think it's innocent, but the person is giving intimate understanding and confiding to someone other than the one person who they are SUPPOSED to share that closest of connections with.
